Sidetracked
After waiting to catch a train home from Manchester once I noticed that a lot of the trains were making very few stops on their way to their destination and how short a time it took to get to Carlisle, and I got to thinking about how long it would take and how many stops their would be if you took the journey the long way round. So, starting at Carlisle I am working my way round the Cumbrian coast to Barrow in Furness, then onto Preston and Manchester (seemed right to finish where I had the original idea).
It soon dawned on me that in total that would be approximately 50 stops and something which could not be achieved easily. I set myself a target of doing the journey in instalments which would make the journey last the whole year, so as well as the development of the journey, you would get some idea of the seasonal changes along some of the most spectacular scenery in the country.
This got me onto my next point, everyone who has visited these places or has some knowledge of the area will know most of the sites of interest from sources such as local Tourist Information offices. I decided that to make the project more of a challenge I would ignore the places that were heavily promoted and look for something a bit more unusual and maybe even randomly taken. I am hoping to gather recommendations from local people along the journey and photographs, films and stories relating to this area.
It will be exhibited in 2012 at the Dock Museum in Barrow in Furness (dates to be confirmed). Pictures and movies will be added as the project develops.
